Home and Personal Protection

Many of my customers have a firearm that they designate as their home or personal protection firearm.  Even though the chance of having to use this firearm is small, it's still there.  If you have a particular firearm in mind that's great.  If not, here are a few firearms that I would recommend.

Mossberg 500

These shotguns are extremely effective as a home protection firearm.  The one pictured above has the optional pistol stock and short barrel.  When using a shotgun for home protection, you have the ability to choose what type of load you want to shoot.  Many people will load their home defense shotguns with light bird shot, but there are also others who use buck shot.  If someone is trying to break into your house, many times you will only have to rack the shotgun to scare them off.  I know I wouldn't stay around if I knew someone was coming after me with this baby.

Springfield Armory 1911 .45

Many companies are producing upgraded models of the old military 1911 .45 pistol.  With improved sights, triggers, and barrels the popularity and precision of this pistol has skyrocketed.  This pistol can be used for either home defense or personal protection.  I know many ex-law enforcement officers who carry this gun as their concealed weapon.  For home defense purposes, this gun is also a great pick.  The knock-down power of the .45 caliber is enormous.  There is a wide variety of ammunition available specifically for home protection, so finding the one that is right for you is the only problem.

Taurus .357 Magnum

A quality .357 revolver like this Taurus is also a great home defense or personal protection pistol.  The great thing about revolvers is that you can keep the weapon loaded without worrying as much about a misfire.  It takes a fairly large amount of pressure to pull the trigger when the hammer is down.  However, when the hammer is cocked, the slightest amount of pressure is all you need to fire the gun.  The .357 magnum caliber also has a very large amount of stopping energy.  Many police officers carry snub nose revolvers like this one as their backup pistol.  Revolvers are very versatile and easy to operate and maintain.
